How Google wants to reinvent the shopping list with AI

Google is currently testing a feature for Keep, its note-taking application. It allows you to generate “Magic Lists” using AI, whether for doing your shopping or to list what you need to take on vacation.

What if you no longer had to write your shopping list? What if it was an artificial intelligence that took care of it? ChatGPT can already do this, telling it what dishes you want to make, but the user interface still leaves something to be desired. This is where Google has a card to play: its Google Keep note-taking application can be used as a shopping list. That’s good: the “ magic lists » could arrive soon.

Of the “magic lists» which generate themselves in Google Keep

It was by digging into the APK code of the Google Keep application that9to5Googlefound traces of the functionality “Magic Lists” (Or “Magic Lists” in French). She is described there as a “help with creative note-taking“.

Google has already tested a similar function in the past. In 2022, an AI Test Kitchen experiment (an AI testing platform) called “List It» allowed the use of LaMDA (one of the company’s language models) so that it could generate a list of subtasks based on an objective that was described to it.

Given at least three words, Google’s AI can generate bulleted lists. For example, we can ask what we need for a camping trip with children: this is an example given by the application. We can also easily imagine a shopping list and school supplies.

Although it is not explained, we can imagine that Google Keep could in the future generate lists from our notes, summarizing those scribbled (or rather typed) during a work meeting or during a course. Like the writing help function in Gmail, the tool displays the list before you add it to your note.

Google avoids responsibility for what its AI can tell you

In the application code, there is text that should appear to users. He indicates that “This is a creative note-taking aid, and is not intended to be factual.» The idea is probably for Google to take no responsibility for what Keep may advise its users.

Magic Lists is also limited: in the event that the list does not respect the conditions of use or is too complex to generate, a message will be displayed. It indicates that the tool is “still learning, and we can’t help you with that.»
