How long can you keep your mascara once opened? A dermatologist answers: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Mascara is one of the most popular makeup products. It generally tints the eyelashes a deep black, curls them, gives volume or even lengthens them. It’s the ideal makeup to open the eyes and give a healthy glow in just a few brush strokes. In terms of preferences, some prefer bristle brushes, others silicone bristles, more or less thick. There are as many types of eyelashes as there are brushes! Some like to use several mascaras for an extravagant false eyelash effect, others have been attached to the same mascara reference for several years.

How often should you change your mascara?

But did you know that it is recommended to respect an expiration date for mascara? This is what Shereene Idriss, a dermatologist on Tik Tok, reveals. “We change our mascara or eyeliner after opening it after three to six months. At this point you could have an infection and no one wants swollen eyeballs.” replies the specialist with humor. You are therefore warned: mascara, like all other beauty products, once opened, is likely to be contaminated by bacteria, which may settle on the eyelashes and contaminate the eyes. These can then itch, sting, weep or even turn red.

According to this doctor, change your mascara every three to six months even if it still contains product. If it has changed texture, smell, color… Don’t take the risk and throw it away directly, even if you’ve had it for less than three months.

How long to keep your lipstick?

And the lipstick? In a previous article, Laure-Hélène, Nocibé Collection makeup and accessories quality manager, indicated that the lifespan of a lipstick varies from one reference to another but that as a general rule, its life expectancy is one year. If it is poorly stored, has an unpleasant odor or its texture turns black or deteriorates, it is best to throw it away.
