how the euro coins were created

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the arrival of euro coins and banknotes, The world broadcasts the first episode of its new podcast “La Monnaie de main en main”. How do you decide on a new currency? And how do you decide on its shape, the symbols that appear in it? From the origins of the common currency, in 2002, to its latest developments… Joaquin Jimenez, artistic creation director and master engraver at the Monnaie de Paris, tells how he took part in the European competition to create the national face of the coins one euro and two euros. It is he who imagined the tree which appears there. Yann, maintenance technician at the Pessac plant in Gironde, experienced the effervescence of this launch. He participated in the making of the first euros. At 1er January 2002, seven billion coins were ready for distribution.
