How the heat wave saved Tesla Electric customers money

Tesla’s energy storage solution can make money, as a recent bout of high heat in Texas showed. And if this possibility arrived in Europe?

At the end of 2022, we told you about the arrival of Tesla Electric, a revolutionary virtual power plant offer. This summer, customers were able to benefit from a bonus of around one hundred dollars following the episode of extreme heat that hit Texas in August.

Turn your house into a power station

Tesla doesn’t just make electric cars. The Texan company has also specialized in everything related to electricity for several years, from solar tiles to charging stations and Powerwalls, these batteries for domestic use.

Customers living in Texas who have one or more Powerwalls can subscribe to Tesla as their electricity supplier since last December. Thanks to their Powerwalls, Tesla chooses to store or consume energy whenever it sees fit, compensating end customers if they supply electricity to the firm.

This dynamic energy management avoids the risk of overloading the American electrical network, unfortunately known to experience power cuts regularly.

During the last 10 days, Tesla indicates Texan customers equipped with Powerwalls in their homes received a credit of an average of $100 (92 euros at the current exchange rate) for their contribution to the stability of the electrical grid.

An imminent arrival in the United Kingdom: what about Europe?

This Tesla Electric offer is still reserved for Texas, but there are signs that its arrival in the United Kingdom is being considered by the parent company. Unfortunately, we don’t have any information about its possible arrival in Europe, although it would make a lot of sense in the future.

Another method of owning a virtual power plant at home would be to take advantage of bi-directional charging technologies like V2G or V2H, however this is not yet on Tesla’s agenda.

Anyway, while electricity has increased further in France, it would be good to take advantage of the large batteries of electric vehicles that are parked at home, so as to reduce energy bills.
