If the mechanical bicycle and the electric bicycle are among the most ecological modes of transport, their production process remains no less polluting – on their scale – for the planet. The very fact of importing a bicycle frame from Asia to Europe generates emissions: you have to cross the planet to transport it, when local production would reduce this carbon footprint.

Three priority pillars

To do this, the international bicycle industry is trying to set the pace. There World Bicycle Industry Association (WBIA) has indeed adopted 10 major measures to make the supply chain of the cycle more sustainable. This initiative is to the credit of the Taiwan Bicycle Association, we learn Bike EU.

As part of the Taipei Cycle Show 2024, three priority principles were put on the agenda: education, energy and eco-design. In the coming months, the WBIA will set up a group of experts to support its members and draw up an initial inventory of the sector.

Kicking off in fall 2024

From Eurobike 2024, organized next July, a “operational model and strategic validation» should be presented by the organization, before the first resolutions take place in the fall of 2024. This is a joint project which aims to bring large manufacturers into compliance and standardize more sustainable methods.

It is clear that this major project is only in its infancy, but that momentum seems to be underway, with, we hope, concrete results from 2025.
