The German manufacturer of motors for electric bicycles Brose has unveiled its security system for its Drive3 Peak Drive, thus thwarting attempts at modifications and in particular unclamping.

In France, electric bikes are required to cut off assistance at 25 km/h, at least for e-bikes other than speedbikes. The problem is that some smart guys like to tamper with engines in order to override this rule. Operations not without risks for driving and for the bike itself. Not to mention the fact that your insurance would be simply useless in the event of an accident.

New protection against tampered with bicycle engines

Manufacturers have taken notice of these aftermarket modifications, including major players Bosch and Shimano being much harder to manipulate than their Chinese competitors. Brose wants to join this clan of secure electric bicycle motors, with its new generation running at 48V. Future Brose Drives3 Peak therefore welcomes a cybersecurity solution, developed over 6 months in collaboration with Cyres Consulting.

“Electric bicycles are very exposed to hacking attempts and other cyberattacks,” explains Florian Sack, director of system architectures at Brose E-Bike. “The intelligent and robust concept blocks unauthorized interventions and modifications. This minimizes suspicion of malfunctions and therefore the concerns of manufacturers and resellers. »

Shields between each component of the electrical system

More concretely, the Brose system “prevents engine modifications through software” operated by a third party. The German brand specifies that “the technology uses cryptography methods for communication between different components”. Thus, shields secure the exchanges between the controller, the motor and the battery of the electric bike.

These new Brose Drive bicycle motors3 Peak will arrive sometime in 2024.
