Since 1er June, we must be able to cancel our insurance “in three clicks”, according to the formula chosen by the government to present this measure. In any case, this is what the law on purchasing power of August 16, 2022 was aimed at. The objective: that the consumer can more easily change insurer and that competition between companies increases.

This termination “in three clicks” must be accessible to the customer if the contract had been concluded electronically or if, on the day of termination, the insurer allows the subscriber to conclude contracts electronically – an option now offered by all. You can therefore cancel online even if you have taken out your contract in an agency or through a broker, and even if the contract dates from before 1er June 2023.

All insurances are concerned by the measure: multi-risk home insurance, borrower insurance linked to a mortgage, health cover, etc. So-called “affinity” insurance, which is taken out at the same time as the purchase of a good or service (for example, cover against the breakage or theft of a mobile phone) is also covered, even if the purchase was made in a store.

“This should be the end of the termination process complexes that encourage some of the insured to resign and let the contracts run, even if it means paying more”, believes Patrick Raffort, president of the Federation of affinity guarantees and insurance. However, he points out that “professional insurance is not included in the system”.

In practice ? A decree of March 16, 2023 set the terms of this termination. It indicates that the insured must be able to directly access this functionality on the website or via a mobile application. The “cancel your contract” button or tab must be unambiguous and displayed in legible characters.

When the customer activates this button, he must first provide certain information allowing the company to verify his identity and a means of contact (email or telephone number) giving the insurer the possibility of confirming the receipt of the notice of termination. The insured must also provide any reference previously communicated to him, such as the contract number concerned and the risk covered.
