The world is remembering WWDC 2023 for the highly anticipated presentation of the Apple Vision Pro, but it’s also the conference where Apple unveiled iOS 17, the next version of the system that powers the iPhone. Here’s how to take advantage of new features in preview thanks to the beta program.
The beta dev is free and accessible to all
Each year, Apple offers, in fact, to test the new features of iOS in beta form over the months before the launch scheduled for the fall with the new iPhones. Until now, we had the right first to a beta reserved for developers, then a slightly more stable general public beta.
Apple is changing its policy slightly in 2023. The first beta is still reserved for developers, but it is now possible to access it for free. Indeed, Apple now offers two programs for developers, a free version which offers access to betas, and a more complete paid version with test tools for application development.
Which iPhones are compatible with iOS 17?
Apple has unveiled the list of iPhones compatible with iOS 17. Three models are excluded from this update: iPhone 8, iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus.
All newer models, whether devices with Face ID or the 2nd generation iPhone SE, are eligible to download and install iOS 17.
What you need to know before starting
This guide installs the developer-only version of iOS 17. These are builds that can be riddled with bugs and should only be installed if you know what you are doing.
Take care to make a full backup of your iPhone before any operation, and if possible, use a secondary iPhone to try the betas.
How to Download and Install iOS 17 Beta
To be able to download iOS 17 on an iPhone, the connected account must first be enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. Handling is free.
Join the Apple Developer Program
Here are the steps to follow to register your Apple ID account on the Apple Developer Program:
- Go to https://developer.apple.com/;
- There, log in with your Apple account;
- And that’s it, it’s as simple as that!
To perform these operations, it is necessary to have activated double authentication on your Apple account.
Download beta to iOS 17
Once the account is correctly registered, downloading it from beta to iOS 17 becomes very simple.
- Go to Settings -> Software Update -> Beta;
- From the menu, choose iOS 17 Developer Beta;
- Return to the Settings -> Software Update menu;
- Select “download and install”.
There you go, your iPhone is now running iOS 17 beta.
