How to join a FaceTime call from Android

For far too long, Android users have been shut out of the Apple ecosystem, including iMessage and FaceTime. Although the first problem is not likely to be resolved in the near future, Apple has been a little more open about its video conferencing platform.

While Android users still can’t initiate a FaceTime call or download a FaceTime app, Apple users can now send an invite link to their Android friends to join them in a video call, the same way as on Zoom links. Here’s how.

How do I set up and receive a FaceTime call?

1. Check that you have installed the latest version of the software.

The FaceTime call must first be initiated by an Apple product user. Here are the minimum requirements:

  • iPhone : iOS 15 or later

  • iPad : iPadOS 15 or later

  • Mac : macOS 12 Monterey or later

2. Sending and receiving a FaceTime link

As Initiator/Host: Launch the FaceTime app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and select the option Create a link in the upper left corner. You will then get a link to send to your contact. You can also customize the name associated with the call.

As a recipient: once you have received the link, click on it and your Internet browser will open a new tab. Next, allow your browser to access your camera and microphone if it hasn’t already. Once the page loads, you will be prompted to enter your name before joining the call. Press on Continue once you have finished.

3. Accept and join the FaceTime call

As initiator/host: After sending the link, Apple will automatically send a message to the recipient, inviting them to join your FaceTime. Once your invitee clicks on the link, you’ll be prompted to accept or decline their participation. Be sure to check the app frequently so you don’t leave your guest waiting.

As the recipient: To join a FaceTime call, all you need is the call link and a stable Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection. To participate, just click on the link, then on the green button To participate. If all goes well, your face will appear in a small square in the lower right corner. If the call host is not connected, the screen will remain black, with a notification Waiting for participants at the top.

4. Using FaceTime

As Initiator/Host: Once connected, you are free to use FaceTime on your iPhone as you normally would. You can add a Memoji sticker or filter, take in-app screenshots, and chat as you see fit. The functionality is more limited for Android users, however. When you have finished the call, hang up as usual.

As the recipient: You won’t be able to get the full FaceTime experience from an Android device. Unlike Apple users, you can’t apply a Memoji sticker or filter to give your call a bit more fun. You also cannot capture images using the FaceTime screenshot button like you would on an iPhone. However, you can take a screenshot manually. Unlike the behavior on iPhone, the other user will not be notified if you take a screenshot.
