On the other hand, if this loss increases over time and you lose large handfuls of hair to the point of noticing a loss of density in certain areas of the scalp, this can become worrying according to Doctor Saxton-Daniels. This phenomenon may be a sign of a deeper condition, called “telogen effluvium.” This is a disruption of the hair cycle, resulting in hair loss that is more abundant than normal and not localized. This disruption can last several months and generally appears after a significant event, a period of great stress, or an illness.
