To migrate from Google Chrome to Dashlane, there are import and export tools that allow you to easily switch your passwords.
Chrome natively provides a password manager in its web browser and it does its job well. But, for one reason or another, you might want to change. However, there is no question of typing your usernames and passwords one by one in the new manager. It’s simpler, thanks to the import/export tools.
The process to recover passwords stored in Chrome is not very difficult. Once the document listing all your codes is on the PC, all you have to do is launch the password manager – here, Dashlane – of your choice to import the file. It’s a matter of a few minutes at most.
Recover your passwords on Google Chrome
The method described below is for Chrome browser version 120.0.6099.225.
- Launch Google Chrome on your computer;
- Bring up the drop-down menu by clicking on the vertical ellipsis at the top right;
- Go to the browser settings;
- Go to “Autofill and Passwords” in the menu on the left;
- Click “Password Manager” in the center of the screen;
- Go to “Settings”, in the menu on the left;
- You will then see the option to export your passwords;
- Click on “Download file”;
Take note of the notice below the download utility: when you have finished your manipulations, remember to delete the file from your computer. If it is a shared PC or one without a code, a third party could come across it, see the passwords and use them to access your accounts (unless there is double authentication).
During this process, you will also need to enter your computer password. In any case, this is what Chrome required on the Windows 10 operating system. On the session used to write this guide, a security code is required to access the desktop, but also installed software (like Chrome).
- Then choose the location where you want to put the file, in CSV format, to find it easily;
- By default, the file name will be “Chrome Passwords”.

Import passwords from Chrome to Dashlane
- Open Dashlane on your web browser;
- Click on “My account” at the top right, in the web application;
- Choose “Settings” then “Import” from the side menu;
- Indicate the source of the imported data (here, Chrome);
- Press “Start” then “Browse your computer” to recover the file on your PC;
- Go to the location where it is located and double-click on it;
- Click “Next” after reading “ CSV file ready for preview Chrome Passwords.csv » ;
- Review the passwords you want to import (you can exclude any by selecting “Do not import” in the corresponding location);
- Then click on “Import items”, with the number of imported passwords indicated in parentheses;
- After a brief moment when the manager recovers everything, a success message is displayed;
- That’s all !
Like Google, Dashlane advises you to delete the CSV file immediately if you no longer need it. In fact, the document is not protected — because it must be readable by managers in the case of transfer from Chrome to another service provider. Also remember to empty the trash right after.
