How to sell your second-hand clothes and accessories successfully: advice from an expert

Selling second hand allows you to earn money, but also to make space in your wardrobe. How to sell your items well? Aurélie Baranes, co-founder of the Jaiio platform, gives us her advice.

THE second hand market is booming. In recent years, buying second-hand clothing has become much more common than before, notably thanks to the creation of several online sales and purchasing platforms, thanks to the desire to save on the shopping budget and finally, thanks to the awakening of awareness about ecological issues. These three factors encourage the practice of selling and buying second hand. “There are plenty of advantages to buying second-hand: you can treat yourself to brands that are not available new. The price is up to -80% cheaper compared to new on Jaiio”, explains Aurélie Baranes, co-founder of the Jaiio second-hand platform. Consuming second hand can also allow you to treat yourself to items found in stores but which are no longer available. “The second-hand system also allows you to upgrade your wardrobe, and above all, buying branded pieces at an affordable price makes it easy to resell because branded clothing often has a price tag.”

If you already think on the resale of your partthen its purchase is seen as an investment and the consumption model is completely circular, which is different from the mode of mass consumption which has been very successful. “We try to educate our community so that they already think about resale, that they see the purchase as an investment. So, they can enjoy it and then when they want to change, they can put it back into the circuit.” Indeed, if you buy second-hand pieces from good brands, they will tend to sell more quickly.

What are the advantages of selling on second-hand platforms?

In addition to doing good for the wallet by replenishing it, putting clothes or accessories on sale second-hand allows you to make space in your wardrobe and get rid of excess items: “Often, we have 70% of our wardrobe that we don’t wear on average, it’s huge. There are pieces lying dormant in our closet and it’s a shame”, indicates Aurélie Baranes, co-founder of the Jaiio platform. Another advantage: we let other people benefit from the pieces we don’t wear. “It’s this circular fashion model, a virtuous model that allows clothes to continue to live.” Of course, while putting your item up for sale remains easy, it can be time-consuming depending on the number of pieces to sell. “At Jaiio, we wanted to remove all the constraints on resale or purchase which may have already discouraged some.” So, the person only has to sort, call or send them an email and Jaiio will come and collect them. “The person doesn’t have to worry about anything and this allows the pieces to be removed quickly, and therefore to have space again.” It’s up to you to choose the platform that suits you best!

Photos, description, price… How to sell your second-hand item well?

“On Jaiio, we take care of publishing the ad for people, but we apply tricks that you can also do”, indicates the specialist.

  • Ensure that the product is in good condition : “This is the basis. We have a rule: the item must make you want to buy it. There must be no holes, no stains, no traces of use…”specifies the expert.
  • Take beautiful photos : “In the photos, the potential buyer must be able to see as many details as possible.” She advises posting at least 4 photos, including one of the label, in the ad.
  • If the garment sold refers to a model (bag, jacket, etc.), it must be indicated: this allows the buyer to plan ahead or potentially go and try a similar piece in store.
  • Establish the right price. The price should not be too high at the start, otherwise the item will not catch on right away and then it will be harder to resell.” Indeed, it is more likely to be sold when it has just been published. “You have to find the right price without devaluing the product, but without overvaluing it either.”

Price remains the most important question. “The advice I give is not to ask too much, not to be too greedy on the price because the main thing is to make money, to make space and to be able to invest in new pieces fashion.” In fact, these are often items that we have had in our closets for a long time. So, selling at a reasonable price is better than keeping clothes that you no longer wear.
