Currently, we’re assuming that How to Train Your Dragon’s plot will follow that of its animated predecessor. However, DreamWorks promises that the live-action adaptation will be “based on stories that are as compelling as they are intimate” and will “immerse audiences deeply in DreamWorks Animation’s imaginative story.”

In the hit animated film, the rather skinny Viking boy Hiccup wants to prove it to his village and, above all, to all those who always make fun of him. To do this, he sets out to hunt for a dragon in order to kill it. This way he could show everyone that he is not a disappointment as the chief’s son.

However, after his plan fails, he instead befriends his victim and finally baptizes him with the name “Toothless”. From then on, the two begin to secretly spend time together and learn a lot about the other species.

The hatred of dragons that was instilled in Hiccup from an early age and is preached every day in his home village of Berk is quickly forgotten. Together with his new best friend, Hiccup wants to combat the Vikings’ prejudices against the misunderstood dragons, but this puts the companions’ unusual friendship to the test.

15-year-old actor Mason Thames will play the role of main character and dragon rider Hiccup. Thames made his breakthrough in the Apple TV+ drama series “For All Mankind” and was most recently seen in the horror film “The Black Phone.”

Nico Parker is the daughter of “Westworld” actress Thandiwe Newton, made her film debut in the Disney live-action adaptation of “Dumbo” and most recently starred alongside Hollywood star Pedro Pascal in the HBO series “The Last of Us”. In “How to Train Your Dragon” she will now take on the role of Hiccup’s crush Astrid.

Also there is Gerard Butler (“300”), who will reprise his role as the Stoic. The actor dubbed the burly Viking chieftain in the animated films. Fischbein, Rotzbakke, Ruffnuss and Tuffnuss are also now cast with Julian Dennison (“Godzilla vs. Kong”), Gabriel Howell (“Bodies”), Bronwyn James (“Lockwood & Co.”) and Harry Trevaldwyn (“Smothered”).

How to Train Your Dragon (2025): Production

Like the animated films and series of “How to Train Your Dragon”, the live-action version will also be based on the children’s book of the same name by Cressida Crowell. As with the animated adventures, Dean DeBlois will direct and write the screenplay for the live-action adaptation. This will be DeBlois’ directing debut on a live-action film. Filming for the new edition is scheduled to start this summer.
