how to use it on your windows pc

Google has expanded the availability of its in-house file sharing solution, called Nearby Share, which allows files to be exchanged between Windows and Android devices, as well as between Android and Windows. In this article, we tell you how this feature works.

Nearby Share by Google

After its launch earlier this year, Google is dramatically expanding the availability of Nearby Share for Windows PCs in almost every country around the world, much to the relief of users who were beginning to feel “far away” from the technology.

Nearby Share for Windows PCs allows Android users to exchange files with their PC, whether desktop or laptop, wirelessly and through native Android menus. As we have already tested it, it is generally very fast and reliable, even in this beta phase which will hopefully suffer little from the curse of ” eternal betas “. Additionally, the service was mostly available in the United States.

Google has since quietly expanded support to other regions. On a support page, Google now states that Nearby Share for Windows PCs is now available in ” most countries in the world “. This includes parts of Europe, including France, as well as many other countries around the world.

How to use Nearby Share?

Arm yourself with your Android smartphone, and your Windows PC. Let’s go !

Enable Nearby Share on your Android device in the app Files from Google:

  1. Open the Files app and tap the three-line icon in the top left.
  2. Select Settings > Nearby Share.
  3. Enable Nearby Share (if not already enabled).

Configure Nearby Share on your Windows PC:

  1. Download Nearby Share beta here and click Get started
  2. Run the downloaded file (BetterTogetherSetup) to begin installation.
  3. Once the app is installed, sign in to your Google account or use the app without an account.
  4. In the window Set up Nearby Sharename your PC and choose who can share with you.
  5. Select the level of visibility for your device (Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, Nobody).
  6. Once satisfied with your choices, click “Done”.

Use Nearby Share to send a file from your Android phone to your Windows PC:

  1. Open the app Filesselect a file and tap the Share icon.
  2. The selected file will be displayed with a button labeled Nearby below. Push the button.
  3. A Nearby Share window will appear with one or more shareable devices (like your Windows computer) listed below.
  4. Tap the one you want to share with.

Send a file from your Windows PC to your Android phone:

  • In the Nearby Share app, select a file.
  • Still in the Nearby Share app on your PC, tap the button that lists the device you want to send the file to. It should only take a few seconds to receive a notification that the file was sent successfully.

It might sound a bit complicated, but once Nearby Share is installed, you’ll be able to share files between your Windows PC and Android phone without having to resort to backdoor methods like email or Google Drive.
