Volkswagen announces the establishment of a partnership with BP, in order to create a new network of fast charging stations throughout Europe by 2024.
Gone are the days when finding a fast charging station was a very difficult task, when there were few of them on the roads and around the expressways. But while the electric car continues to become more popular over the years and technologies are constantly evolving, their daily use has become increasingly simple.
In addition to the fact that the batteries now offer a marked increase in autonomy compared to what was done five or ten years ago on the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoé, the range of terminals has also expanded. New players have indeed appeared, while technologies now make it possible to offer users much faster charging, thanks to increased power.
A new partnership with Volkswagen
From now on, it is much easier to find a place to recharge your vehicle, while manufacturers are investing massively in the development of the network of terminals. This is particularly the case of Volkswagen, one of the brands behind Ionity, which specializes in fast charging on highways. But the Wolfsburg firm does not want to rest on its laurels, quite the contrary. And for good reason, it has just announced via a press release the establishment of a new partnership.
Signed with the oil group BP, this will aim to create a vast network of fast charging stations throughout Europe by 2024. No less than 4,000 charging points will first be installed in Germany and Great Britain, before reaching a total of 8,000 across the Old Continent. These will then be installed in stations offering several services, such as toilets or catering.
Terminals for everyone
The press release mentions the equipment deployed for the occasion: the Flexpole terminals, which have two charging points and a charging capacity of 150 kW, and whose implementation has already begun in a station located in Düsseldorf. We know, however, that if these will be installed by the German firm, all users of electric cars will be able to connect to them, regardless of the brand of their vehicle, as is already the case on the Ionity network.
The Wolfsburg manufacturer points out that all of these charging points will be integrated into the routes of the navigation systems of the Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat and Cupra models in the coming months. The price of the charge has not yet been communicated.
