Two years after his Elite Dragonfly, first laptop made from recycled materials from ocean waste, HP continues on its line by introducing an “ecological” version of its HP 14. A model rather oriented mid-range.

HP will launch three versions of its accessible ultraportable HP 14 later this year: a first under AMD processor, another under Intel processor… and a last, more expensive, with eco-responsible claims. Called “Eco Edition”, this version is also equipped with Intel chips, but relies on a slightly greener approach than normal.

Ocean plastics, recycled metal and a little something extra

For the parts making up its chassis, the device relies on a combination of several materials: recycled metal, recycled plastic from ocean waste, among other things… or even used cooking oils, currently used for the back of the cover, explains HP . The firm adds that its product uses water-based paint, especially for the keyboard, and fully recyclable packaging.

Small attentions that must be welcomed, of course, but which unfortunately still remain too timid: up to 25% of the chassis only uses these various recycled materials. This is less than what Acer offers for example and its Aspire Vero 15, recently tested on Clubic.

A “classic-classic” technical sheet

Beyond this (slightly) more environmentally friendly approach, the HP 14 Eco Edition adopts a very classic technical sheet. It is also relatively bulky for a 14 inch, with up to 3.2 cm thick at the hinge for 1.4 kg on the scale.

Inside the chassis we find the latest generation Intel processors ranging from the small Core i3-1315U to the powerful Core i7-1360P. The chosen chip will be coupled with 4, 8, 12 or 16 GB of RAM (DDR4 at 3,200 MHz) depending on the options, while we can go up to 1 TB of M.2 SSD storage. The set is powered by a 41 Wh battery rechargeable using a 45 or 64 W charger.

The device includes for the rest a 1080p webcam, a USB-C port, two USB-A ports, a headphone jack, a power jack and an HDMI 1.4b output. Its connectivity is based around Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, while two screen options are available: either a QHD IPS panel, 100% sRGB, and 300 nits; i.e. a Full HD, 45 NTSC IPS panel rising to a maximum brightness of 250 nits.

Expected next May, the device will be negotiated from 649 euros in Full HD/i3/4 GB and 128 GB versions. device will start from 299 euros in Intel version, and from 449 euros in AMD version.
