Huawei formalizes its P50 Pocket, a folding smartphone in clamshell format. A model reserved for the time being for the Chinese market, and positioned in the very high-end segment.

On the occasion of a conference rich in announcements, held in these last days of the year, Huawei unveils in China a salvo of novelties. Among them, the eagerly awaited P50 Pocket, its folding smartphone in clamshell format. A variation of the P50 series announced last summer, the design of which had already been unveiled a few days ago.

The smartphone now delivers its technical sheet in detail. This direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 measures 170 x 75.5 x 7.5mm when opened and weighs 190 grams. It differs from it when folded, since Huawei shows a device with a 180 ° fold, with no or almost no gap between the two parts of the machine. On the outside, Huawei uses a circular design that it likes to use on the various elements of its smartphones for several generations: it is therefore a “Screen Ring” which serves here as a secondary screen. This small 1.04 inch Oled panel displays 340 x 340px and a standard refresh rate of 60Hz. It sits next to a slightly prominent photo block, which hides a 40mp main sensor (wide-angle, f / 1.8), a second of 13 mpx (ultra wide-angle, f / 2.2) and a “super-spectrum” sensor of 32 mpx (eq. 30 mm, f / 1.8) whose uses ask to be detailed. However, Huawei indicates that the latter is able to detect whether the user has correctly applied their sunscreen to their face, or removed their makeup correctly …

The interior screen of the P50 Pocket measures 6.9 inches. This stretched Oled panel (21: 9 ratio) displays 2790 x 1188 px and benefits from an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz. Behind it hides the Snapdragon 888 chip from Qualcomm which, like the latest devices from Huawei does not include a 5G modem: it is therefore a smartphone that is certainly premium, but 4G, which the brand makes official. Its chipset is flanked by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage or, in a special version of the device, 12 and 512 GB of memory. Additionally, NM (nano memory) memory cards are supported. Note that Huawei completes the face recognition of the smartphone with a side fingerprint reader.

Finally, let us add that this P50 Pocket includes a 4000 mAh battery (40 W charge), a little more than the 3300 mAh of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, and runs under the brand’s operating system, Harmony OS 2.0. This model is currently reserved for China, where it is now billed 8,988 yuan, or about € 1,250 excluding taxes at the current exchange rate, and 10,988 yuan for its special edition 12 GB with the golden shell, or around € 1,525. We will not know any more about the possible international release, however unlikely, until early next year.
