Huawei Watch GT4 in a short test: One smartwatch is more stylish than the other

HUAWEI WATCH GT4

Huawei is launching a new generation of its most successful smartwatch with the Watch GT4. In the short test, it scores particularly well with its diverse design options.

Huawei is expanding its smartwatch portfolio in the fall. After the Huawei Watch Ultimate, the Huawei Watch 4 (Pro) and the Huawei WatchBuds, the Watch GT4 is a successor to the successful Watch GT3.

  1. Design and workmanship

  2. New GPS technology on the 46 millimeter model

  3. There are also innovations on the software side:

  4. Setup and compatibility

  5. Price and availability

  6. Netzwelt means

The new model was developed under the motto “Fashion meets innovation” and should not only score points with its range of functions, but also with its design.

Design and workmanship

Huawei offers the Watch GT4 in two sizes: 41 and 46 millimeters. Unlike many competitors, these differ not only in size, but also significantly in appearance. For the larger version, the manufacturer uses a housing in the shape of an octagon, while the smaller version is circular. The connecting elements are the crown and the additional button, which are located on the right edge of the case on all models.

Both the 46 millimeter model and the smaller version are also available in several versions, which differ primarily in color and bracelet, but sometimes also in smaller details. The Watch GT 4 (46 mm) is available in black, brown, green and gray.

The black version comes with a fluoroelastomer strap. equipped and aimed at athletes. The bezel is slightly raised here to protect the display from damage in the event of a fall. The brown version, however, comes with a leather strap in a matching color.

This is what the Huawei Watch GT4 looks like.

With its surrounding stainless steel link bracelet, the gray model looks like it was made from a single piece and is reminiscent of the Huawei Watch Ultimate, which is almost twice as expensive. In the green model, the bracelet is made of fluoroelastomer and recycled nylon. In addition to the silver-colored bezel, a green and white frame surrounds the display, which can show the time according to Greenwich Mean Time.

With the 41 millimeter model you only have the choice between three variants. What particularly stands out here is the piano version with its decorative gold and silver-colored details on the case and alternating bracelet. Alternatively, the watch is also available with a white leather strap or a gold Milanese strap.

All seven model variants of the Huawei Watch GT4 are dust- and waterproof according to IP68 and can withstand a water pressure of 5 ATM. The workmanship is of high quality, as usual with Huawei smartwatches.

We like the large selection and that the individual variants also have small details such as the display of Greenwich Mean Time. Here’s something for every taste.

New GPS technology on the 46 millimeter model

But Huawei has not only placed a lot of emphasis on the design, but has also refined the technology. The antennas installed to connect to GPS and other satellite systems should no longer be rigidly aligned, but rather flexibly aligned. Huawei compares this to the head of a sunflower rotating in the direction of the sun.

Compared to previous GT models, the accuracy is said to improve by 30 percent. In addition, the connection should remain stable even during training. Due to the space required, the new antenna technology is only used in the 46 millimeter model.

Apparently it doesn’t enable a faster connection setup, at least in our short test the Huawei Watch GT4 had to admit defeat to our privately used Garmin Forerunner 735 XT. Interesting: If you start a training session on the watch, it takes longer before it finds the GPS signal. If you start it via Huawei Health on your cell phone with a paired watch, the satellite connection will be established much more quickly. A bug that was already known from previous Huawei wearables and unfortunately still hasn’t been fixed.

The Huawei TruSeen pulse sensor has also been improved. In version 5.5 it is now intended to provide more precise data for activities in which the heart rate often fluctuates significantly – such as jumping rope or running. The measurement is also said to have been improved at low temperatures or on narrow wrists where the watch quickly slips. In all cases, the manufacturer promises a 30 percent increase in accuracy compared to the Watch GT 3.

Unlike GPS reception, the 41 millimeter version also benefits from the improved TruSeen sensor.

There are also innovations on the software side:

  • The Watch GT4 now also offers football and paddling as sport modes. In total there are over 100 sports modes to choose from.
  • The sleep tracking TruSleep 3.0 now also includes your breathing and draws attention to irregularities. To do this, Huawei uses, among other things, the SpO2 and pulse values measured during the night. However, Huawei points out that this is not a certified medical test. If you discover any irregularities, you should consult a doctor to clarify them.
  • With Stay Fit, the Watch GT 4 is the first smartwatch to also offer a type of nutritional advice. The watch includes measured health data in the calorie management and tells you directly in the watch face how many calories you can still consume.
  • The activity rings have also been optimized, showing daily fitness statistics (calorie consumption, training duration and standing activity) at a glance and rewarding you with medals when you reach your goals.
  • You should now be able to respond to incoming notifications from messenger apps like WhatsApp with quick replies. For the Watch GT3, this functionality was only added via an update.
  • The cycle tracking has also been improved, which should now enable a more precise prediction of the next period.

Setup and compatibility

The Huawei Watch GT4 can still be used with both Android phones and the iPhone. However, some features are only available to you with a paired Huawei cell phone. This includes AI Voice voice control.

To set it up, you need the Huawei Health app, which you can download using a QR code displayed on the watch. You also need a free Huawei account.
