huge price drop in France, the maximum ecological bonus finally back

Tesla has just made a huge price drop in France on its two flagship electric cars, the Model 3 and Model Y. The price plummets by more than 10,000 euros for the Model 3 including the ecological bonus, and almost as much for the Model Y.

The year 2023 was going to be difficult for Tesla, with increasingly sharp competition. But that was without counting on this spectacular price drop that just took place last night in Europe, and therefore in France.

Teslas from 37,990 euros

Previously sold from 53,990 euros, the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion now trades from 44,990 euros. With the ecological bonus of 5,000 euros, the price plummets to €39,990. Or even 37,990 euros for households benefiting from the maximum bonus of 7,000 euros.

For the Model Y Propulsion, the drop is a little less spectacular, since we go from a price of 49,990 euros to 46,990 euros. But with this “small” drop of 3,000 euros, Tesla managed to bring its family SUV under the ecological bonus ceiling (47,000 euros) of 5,000 or 7,000 euros depending on the situation. This allows to have a final price of 41,990 euros, or even 39,990 euros with the maximum bonus.

Finally, a little coquetry on the part of Tesla: if previously only the color white was standard, the customer now has the choice between white and black, at no extra charge. This will avoid crossing only (or rather mainly) Tesla Model Y Propulsion as is currently the case.

But beware, the slightest option (white interior, rims or tow hook) will take the Tesla Model Y beyond the 47,000 euro mark, which will deprive it of any ecological bonus.

Why this price drop?

This extraordinary price drop inevitably raises many questions. Recent price adjustments around the world, and particularly in China, raised fears of a demand problem for Tesla. The Chinese branch had recently refuted these rumors. It is now the turn of the European branch to make the same statement.

Indeed, the firm of Elon Musk announces that a ” state-of-the-art engineering and scalable production processes has allowed us to go even further in our ability to manufacture the best products in the world. best cost » before adding that « As local production of our vehicles continues to grow and generating new economies of scale globally, we are now making the Model 3 and Model Y even more accessible in Europe.”

A Tesla Model Y Propulsion made in Berlin?

Does this mean that the Tesla Model Propulsion is now manufactured in the Gigafactory in Berlin? It is unlikely, given the production capacities, compared to the Shanghai factory. This argument is therefore a bit strange, since most Model Ys and all Model 3s sold in Europe are imported from China. Not really local production.

Tesla defends itself however by specifying that the past years had been more difficult, because of problems “ ranging from the shortage of semiconductors to the energy crisis, including logistical constraints and various disruptions related to COVID » which then makes it possible to observe « a stabilization of the inflation of certain costs, giving us enough confidence to be able to transfer this to our customers“.

The same argument that was put forward by the Chinese branch of Tesla for the Asian price drop a few days earlier.

There is no doubt that with this pricing policy, Tesla will manage to transform the test in 2023, succeeding in placing the Tesla Model Y on the podium of the best-selling cars in the world. It could even take first place, currently held by Toyota with the RAV4 followed by the Corolla, with just over a million units sold in 2021. For the year 2022, the first estimates leave Toyota as the leader in the automotive market. , but with the Model Y and Model 3 in the top 5.
