On paper, the small AI Pin connected pin by Humane was enough to arouse real curiosity. But in real life, it seems to be more complicated…

At the end of 2023, Humane presented its AI Pin, a connected pin, aimed at replacing our sacrosanct smartphone. No screen here, but an AI-boosted gadget equipped with a small laser projector for interactions. Recently, the object has been in the hands of the American press, and it has been a fiasco.

IA Pin, catastrophic first returns in the United States

Indeed, it seems that reality very quickly caught up with the ambitions of the AI Pin. Priced at almost $700, the little gadget, which requires a 4G subscription to work, is still a long way from disturbing our smartphones.

Remember that the AI Pin is powered by a Snapdragon processor and “sees” its environment through a 13 Mpx camera, with a field angle of 120 degrees. Added to this are 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, 4G and Wi-Fi compatibility, not forgetting a small laser projector.

Problems with queries, with the laser sensor, with the camera, with the battery…

Attached to a t-shirt (or any other item of clothing), the AI Pin is primarily controlled by voice. Unfortunately, for The Vergethe object “ simply doesn’t work “. If some requests (with ChatGPT-4) produce a correct result, others report numerous errors, not to mention a long delay, with around ten seconds to send a simple SMS.

Same observation on the side of the projector, whose display is very difficult to read. The Pin AI would also have difficulty recognizing objects in front of it. In addition, CosmOS would be very capricious and obviously quite energy consuming, since the AI Pin would be incapable of lasting an entire day without going through the recharge box, with on top of that a tendency to overheat.

Of course, like any new high-tech product, we imagine that Humane will be keen to refine its AI Pin with updates. Still, at present, this new toy is (very) far from convincing its audience.

Improvements are said to be already under development, but the one that described itself as a “ smartphone killer » actually seems quite harmless.
