  • A Syrian border crossing to Turkey has been closed since Monday, allowing humanitarian aid to be delivered to rebel areas.
  • An agreement has now been reached and access is open for a further six months.
  • 4.1 million people need support in this region.

“The government of the Syrian Arab Republic has taken the sovereign decision to grant the United Nations and its specialized agencies permission to use the Bab al-Hawa border crossing,” Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bassam Sabbach wrote to the UN Security Council on Thursday. The border crossing, which is central to the delivery of humanitarian aid, had previously been closed since Monday.

Permission to use the border crossing is valid for six months. The border crossing was closed because the Security Council could not agree on the new duration of the new agreement. Western states wanted to open the border for at least nine months. Russia vetoed and wanted to reach a six-month agreement, but this proposal also failed in the panel. It shouldn’t be a coincidence that Syria’s ruler Bashar al-Assad is now opening the blockade on the border for exactly six months. Russia is one of the Syrian government’s closest allies.

Around 4.1 million people are in need of assistance in the rebel-held region of north-west Syria. Bashar al-Assad closed the Bab al-Hawa border crossing in the past to regain influence over parts of the country where the rebels rule.
