Hurricane gusts up to 179 km/h – storm “Roxana” sweeps across Switzerland – News

  • In the mountains, storm depression “Roxana” has already brought hurricane gusts.
  • 179 km/h were measured on the Gornergrat and 173 km/h on the Jungfraujoch, as reported by SRF Meteo.
  • Storm gusts of over 100 km/h were also registered at night at low altitudes.

In the morning hours, further storm and hurricane gusts had to be expected, especially in the outer Alpine valleys and on the mountain peaks.

In Altdorf, the wind blew strongest at 123 km/h in the lowlands, in Zurich it was 122 km/h.

In several areas, traffic was obstructed by fallen trees and objects on the road. According to a report, the Zurich cantonal police received around 60 reports on Monday night – albeit without the cities of Zurich and Winterthur. Nobody got hurt. In numerous cases, according to the canton police, the local fire brigades or maintenance services had to be called in to clear the streets.

The police also secured objects such as tents, tarpaulins and trampolines that were blown around uncontrollably by the strong gusts of wind. On the A1 near Winterthur-Töss, insulation material from a construction site had to be cleared from the roadway. In Andelfingen, a driver collided with a broken tree. According to police, she was unharmed.

Monday prospects

According to SRF Meteo, the storm reached its maximum during the night. There should be fresh snow again on Monday. Around 20 and sometimes up to 50 cm are expected on the northern flank of the Alps or the Jura heights, but this will be carried away by the strong wind. The avalanche danger remains high. Snow is also possible in the lowlands.

In addition, gusts of 70 to 110 km/h are to be expected in Ticino and in the southern valleys of Graubünden.
