HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless review: the new benchmark for wireless gaming headsets

HyperX has finally decided to offer a wireless version of the Cloud Alpha, one of its best gaming headsets. Is it so convincing? Answer in our comprehensive test!

Helmet gamer HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless is the brand’s new wireless model and very clearly takes up the base of the wired model. We therefore find the signature design of HyperX and, visually, it is almost impossible to tell the difference between the two models.

This wireless version is offered at the recommended price of 220 euros. A rather high price for a helmet gamer wireless which makes us hope for the best when it comes to its performance. After a few weeks of use, it’s time to give you our full review.

HyperX has not seen fit to review the winning formula of Cloud Alpha on this wireless version (and that’s good). This model wireless takes exactly the same design as its counterpart. Only a few minor differences, mainly related to its wireless operation, are in the game.

The Alpha Wireless Cloud revolves around a very flexible arch and covered with a textured faux leather upholstery stamped with the brand’s logo. The usual red stitching, dear to the brand, is also included.

The supports for the earpieces are still made of brushed red metal and slide in the headband to adapt the helmet to each person’s morphology. The amplitude is, as always with HyperX, very generous and allows the helmet to be screwed without difficulty on all heads.

The movement of the vertical axis is still as important and allows the ear cups to be placed comfortably on the side of the skull. These headsets are equipped with a generous memory foam covered with a leatherette type coating that promotes insulation, but will necessarily involve a little heat over long gaming sessions.

Once screwed on the head, the Cloud Alpha Wireless is just as comfortable as its wired version while being heavier by about 30 grams. HyperX has nothing more to prove on this point and we take advantage here of a helmet with undeniable comfort which can be used painlessly and without fatigue for many hours.

The earbuds are always made of black plastic with a peach skin type coating on the sides. They feature the brand’s usual red logo and do not include RGB lighting, which is not a bad thing as its interest is limited on a helmet.

The right atrium is equipped with the traditional volume control wheel. The latter offers slightly marked notches and is sufficiently resistant not to be operated by mistake. On the other side, there is the power button and a second button to mute the microphone.

The detachable microphone that comes in the box is similar to what HyperX usually comes with a practical and sufficiently long memory stick. The capsule is surrounded at its base by a luminous indicator which lights up when the recording is cut. Finally, a windshield is also provided.

Wired operating point here since the USB C port positioned at the base of the left headset will only be used to charge the battery. It has become a habit for a few years on the helmets of the brand which nevertheless offered a jack port a few years ago.

the HyperX’s Cloud Alpha Wireless is flawless in design and ergonomics. The helmet is solid, very well assembled and offers impeccable comfort. It is therefore a real pleasure to use it on a daily basis and its design, although assertive with its touches of red, will remain timeless.

HyperX still hasn’t gone the extra mile on the software suite that accompanies its devices. The HyperX NGenuity driver, common to all the brand’s products still sorely lacking in features compared to its competitors, especially when it comes to helmets.

If we omit the unnecessary volume adjustment sliders, the only interesting options are the activation of DTS:X spatial sound and the 10-band equalizer. The latter is also rather well done although it lacks a power scale. It is also accompanied by several presets.

For the rest, it will be possible to create profiles to associate with games and applications. This could, for example, make it possible to activate a specific equalizer depending on the use made of the headset or even to activate the spatialization in game.

Autonomy is certainly the point that impresses the most with the Cloud Alpha Wireless. HyperX also claims no less than 300 hours of continuous use under optimal conditions and without the microphone. As often, it is impossible to verify these values ​​precisely.

Still, after a week of almost daily use, we didn’t have to charge the headphones once and there is still about 80% battery remaining. It’s quite simply the most enduring headset we’ve been able to test so far.

Without impressing, the wireless connection is also very efficient.. This is hardly surprising since HyperX has already accustomed us to this on its previous models. As with Cloud II Wireless, the 2.4 GHz link is provided by a dongle who underwent a small slimming cure.

We did not notice any cuts in current use. The range is also very correct and the headset can be used optimally even several meters away from the computer and even in another room. As always, thicker walls can be a problem.

The Cloud Alpha has always been renowned for its very qualitative and balanced sound reproduction. This new version is no exception and is positioned as a real benchmark in the gaming headset market. The recipe still works just as well and we benefit here from a very convincing helmet.

The sound signature of the Cloud Alpha Wireless shows overall very balanced although a classic emphasis on low frequencies should be noted, without this being really disturbing. The helmet still sounds so ” correct » and is ideal for listening to music as it lets the different instruments breathe.

Of course, it is quite suitable for video game use thanks to its wide soundstage and convincing stereophony. We don’t necessarily recommend using the DTS:X mode, which tends to distort the sound too much, whereas classic stereo does very well.

In summary, he clearly outperforms the Cloud II Wireless and is simply positioned as one of the best helmetsgamerwireless as far as sound reproduction is concerned.

The microphone that equips the Cloud Alpha Wireless also does a little better than its predecessors. If we do not achieve a sound rendering as convincing as the best students on the market, we benefit here from a voice transcribed in a clear and intelligible way with a very correct attenuation of surrounding noise.
