“I am in the middle”: Elisabeth Borne’s announcements in response to the riots leave mayors unmoved

Soldiers to supervise young delinquents, community service for so-called defaulting parents… These are the measures that Élisabeth Borne will submit to Parliament to guarantee security and strengthen national cohesion.

Four months after the riots which marked the country, triggered by the death of young Nahel, 17, after refusing to comply during a road check in Nanterre, the Prime Minister is playing the iron fist card in a velvet glove by displaying his firmness in front of the mayors gathered at the Sorbonne. In particular, she promises them 100 million euros to rebuild the destroyed buildings.

“There was no general criminal response”

But upon leaving the Sorbonne amphitheater, there was no excitement. The government’s measures do not convince Marie Carole Ciuntu, Les Républicains mayor of Sucy-en-Brie. “Today’s announcements actually hide the fact that, contrary to what the government claims, there has been no general criminal response in all territories,” she said at the microphone of Europe 1 .

For his part, the mayor of La Rochelle, Jean-François Fountaine, center left without label, says he remains hungry for the moment. “I’m somewhere in between,” he admits. “What I’m waiting for is everything related to prevention, that is to say supporting neighborhood life so that young people in our neighborhoods feel like full citizens,” adds the elected official.

The expected social component

On the left, we mainly remember one announcement: the possibility for the municipal police to carry out certain tasks of the judicial police, as explained by Damien Allouch, PS mayor of Épinay-sous-Sénart, in Essonne. “I remember several things, in particular the question of the place of the municipal police and I am waiting to see, how many of my colleagues will agree to continue to pay the municipal police, even though they will be less and less less under our orders”, worries the Socialist.

Most elected officials are now awaiting the presentation of the social component this Friday, during the Interministerial Committee of Cities.
