"I had a traumatic childbirth"

Although childbirth is often prepared and idealized, unfortunately it does not always go as planned. This mother shares her story to inform and prevent future mothers.

Childbirth is often eagerly awaited by mothers-to-be, eager to meet their baby. Unfortunately, although you are prepared for it, complications can turn this dream moment into a nightmare. And if you were planning to give birth vaginally, it is sometimes necessary to have an emergency cesarean section. Especially if the baby or the mother is in pain. This is what happened to Sherley. Mother of a 4 month old baby boy, she went through a cesarean delivery and a very difficult postpartum. She tells her story to aufeminin.

“Hello mums and future mums.
I wanted to testify about my pregnancy and childbirth.
Rather, I had an easy-going pregnancy, aside from the nausea and acid reflux (it was awful).
My pregnancy is going on, last horrible month between insomnia, baby who just moves, baby who pushes and false contractions which made me go for nothing to the emergency room thinking it was D-day. Full term, September 29 2020, my son does not go out, so I go to the maternity ward every two days to monitor and check the baby's heart etc.

An inevitable trigger

On October 1, 2020, I go to the maternity ward to check the baby and there I have 17 hypertension (high blood pressure), the gynecologist finally decides to release me, because the labor had still not started. I was triggered at 10:45 am, more than to wait. At 1 p.m., I go up to my room.
Around 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., I started having big, excruciating and extremely painful contractions, to the point that I couldn't even walk. The maternity caregivers suggest that I take a bath. The bath was absolutely useless, it neither relieved nor helped me. Then I am asked to monitor to listen to baby.

Around 9:30 p.m., the night shift came to introduce itself. The midwife suggests that I put the epidural on myself, because I am starting to become violent and insulting towards the staff and my husband. Once the epidural was put in, I didn't feel anything. Moreover for the epidural, it really does not hurt, the more you bulge your back, the more the needle will not be deep.
Around midnight, I fall asleep. The midwife comes to check the monitoring every 30-45 minutes.

An emergency cesarean

Between 1.30 am and 1.45 am, the midwife comes to wake me up, tells me that the monitoring has not been good for almost an hour, that my son's heart stops beating and the birth must be done by cesarean section. 'emergency. I collapsed, I had not been warned of the risk of cesarean section. I was given some medicine to numb my body, but I was conscious. Then, I'm dragged from bed to bed, I feel like I'm being treated like an animal. Between 1:50 and 2:30 am I am told the birth of the love of my life, it is shown to me vaguely and it is taken away from me directly. I collapse, I still do not realize that my son has just been born, but that he has been taken from me for treatment.

Around 2:30 am, I go to the recovery room. Around 4.30 am, I go back to my room.
I stay in the maternity ward for 5 days (this is the protocol for a cesarean delivery).

A complicated return home

Maternity stay over, I am going home on October 7th. No maternity care on my caesarean scar, only the shower.

On October 12th, I wake up, I see liquid on my bed, my husband tells me that it is sweat and that it is nothing. I ask the nurse who was giving the injections to check my scar as a precaution, she tells me the scar is leaking, but it's okay. I had had a high fever for 3 days. I am advised to go see an emergency doctor. So I go to the doctor, he calls me, I get up and there, a tide of blood mixed with stink explodes and flows from my stomach. My doctor was shocked, he was frozen, he looked at me with fear, he lay me down, lift my stomach and said to me word for word "I'm not letting you go in, I'm calling the fire department, your scar is open and sinking a lot." Besides, the smell with the infection was horrible.

The firefighters arrive and transport me to the maternity ward.
I arrive in the emergency room, the emergency doctor looks and empties my stomach. Finally, I have a big abscess on the right side in my stomach. It took 20 days for the abscess to empty completely and 1 month of wicking (the act of draining a wound or abscess with a wick).

I had an extremely bad experience with my childbirth where I was treated like cattle and my post-partum was catastrophic, I also suffer from the fact that I had to struggle to accept my body as it is.

If I have any advice for future mums, follow your instincts, do not hesitate to consult if you are not well, even if it is not serious. Attend the childbirth preparation course, it could have been useful for the cesarean section, for breastfeeding and above all to rest and take care of yourself, it is important. "
