A musical tribute. This Friday, March 25, Axel Bauer was invited on the set of Taratata to evoke his last album but also his fight against the disease, as he evokes it in It’s smart. In the columns of the Parisian in fact, he revealed to be suffering from cancer. “The news fell this morning, the cold is gaining ground a little, I could have avoided it, it’s smart. The news fell this morning, the tears ran down your hands, there’s this foreign body, it’s clever. So far invincible, and yet”, he sings in this title. The interpreter of night freighter has since been fighting cancer, but prefers not to dwell on his illness. On the Taratata set, therefore, he preferred to pay a fine tribute to Jacques Higelin, to whom he was very close.
“You know he died the same day as my father, the same year. So the same day I lost my father and a friend”, revealed Axel Bauer before performing one of Jacques Higelin’s hits, Paris – New York, New York – Paris. On his last album, he also honors the memory of his dad, Franck Bauer, the last announcer of Radio London. “This song was born, in fact, about ten years ago. At the time, my father had come to the house and told me his story. He had me quite late and, when I ‘was a kid, he never talked about the war. I really discovered his psychology by reading ’40 in London’. We wanted to do this song together, he remembered with the Parisian. I recorded his voice, I asked him to repeat ‘the French speak to the French’ – which he had done 517 times for the show.”
Axel Bauer: “It’s a message of hope”
Faced with illness, the singer wants to stay optimistic. “There is an autobiographical character, but I did not have to undergo treatment”, he confided in the columns of Parisian revealing to suffer from cancer. He added, about the song he had written about it: “What interests me is to tell the moment when your life changes, when you receive such disturbing news which shows you that you are not invincible, which places you in front of a real choice of survival, of resistance there too. It is a message of hope. It’s not the first time I’ve seen the truck pass by. But I have long been convinced that you must make death your best ally.
