“I made my friend cry when she revealed to me the choice of her child’s first name (it’s a home accessory)”

On the Reddit forum, a woman recounts the day she made her friend cry by commenting on the choice of first name chosen for her baby, which turned out to be the same name as a home accessory. An initiative based on a good feeling which was not perceived in the same light by her friend.

Choosing a baby name turns out to be a more difficult task than it seems for many parents-to-be. And for good reason: the social pressure that weighs on future parents is sometimes such that what should be an almost natural and pleasant choice can quickly turn into an ordeal. When it comes to first names, and as in many other areas, tastes and preferences are obviously subjective.

Unfortunately, there is no secret formula that everyone can agree on when it comes to choosing the name of a little boy or girl. A problem that is all the greater for couples formed within large families in which uncles, brothers-in-law and other grandparents most of the time find something to complain about regarding the choice made by the future parents. When criticism does not come from the family sphere, it can certainly come from those around you.

“It sounded like a surfer’s name”

There are many friends who do not hesitate to make suggestions for names that they consider nice or, conversely, do everything to discourage future parents from choosing this or that name for their baby. Most of the time, this advice is based on a good feeling which consists in particular of ensuring that the chosen first name is not likely to be detrimental to the well-being of the child in view of the mockery to which it could give rise.

It is undoubtedly this feeling that pushed this Internet user to question the choice of first name of her friend who is preparing to welcome her third child. “She told me she was really happy with the name, that no one else had a name like that, that it was super cool and different, and that it sounded like a surfer name.”says the Internet user on the Reddit forum, as reported The Sun.

“I was a little lost”

Aware of her friend’s rather original tastes in terms of first names, she did not, however, expect that she would set her sights on Coaster (either “coaster” in FrenchEditor’s note) for the first name of her future baby whose sex she does not want to know before birth.

“I was a little lost, so I wanted to clarify things. Like… the mat you place your glass on to protect the table?”, she continues on the forum. A comment which clearly did not have the desired effect. At first, the mother-to-be became defensive. She explained that she had never heard of such a word and that to choose Coaster as a first name for her child seemed entirely appropriate despite the reservations expressed by her friend.

“Someone else would make the association sooner or later”

The discussion between the two women therefore concluded with the idea that this choice of first name was “cool”. But later in the evening, the young woman was surprised when she received a text message from her friend’s partner telling her that she had cried all evening because of the criticism leveled against her choice of first name.

“I responded by saying that someone else would make the association sooner or later, and that it would be better for her to know what a coaster was before the child was born.”, she explained. A message for which she is still waiting for a response.
