2024 - "I miss him": the magnificent tribute of Elizabeth II to Prince Philip during his Christmas address

During her Christmas speech, delivered Friday, December 24, Elizabeth II paid a moving tribute to Prince Philip by evoking the latter’s disappearance, which occurred last April.

A first Christmas without her beloved husband. Last April, Prince Philip passed away at the age of 99, leaving behind a grieving royal family, and above all, Elizabeth II, his wife. For 73 years, the royal couple served the UK, regularly appearing as accomplices and side by side in upholding their family’s values. Leaving nothing of her sorrow, the Queen has since briefly spoken of the disappearance of the one who has been her “strength”, and supported her for many years. But on the occasion of her Christmas speech, she left out the “never complain, never explain”, to share the pain caused by the death of her husband.

“Although it is a time of great happiness and merriment for many people, Christmas can be difficult for those who have lost loved ones. This year, I particularly understand why“, thus confided Elizabeth II during her speech, recorded at Windsor Castle where she decided to spend the holidays. Dressed in a red dress, the queen had during her speech chosen to highlight a photo of her and Prince Philip taken on their 60th wedding anniversary, even sporting on the chest, a chrysanthemum brooch in sapphire that she wore on her honeymoon at Birkhall Manor.

Elizabeth II misses Prince Philip’s ‘familiar laughter’

The 95-year-old monarch also claimed to have “derived great comfort” of the many tributes she has received since the death of the Duke of Edinburgh last April. Evoking fondly Prince Philip, she quotes “his sense of duty, his intellectual curiosity and his ability to have fun in any situation”. “The mischievous and questioning glow (of his eyes) was as brilliant at the end as when I first laid eyes on him,” she confided, before concluding her message with a very moving sentence: “Although I miss him, and my family miss him, I know he would like us to enjoy Christmas“, insisting on the “joy” Of the party “despite the familiar laughter we miss“.
