I subscribed to every streaming service – now I’m broke!

Imagine subscribing to every streaming service in Germany – all packages, all providers. How expensive would that really be?

I’m coming out – I’m subscribed to too many streaming services. With Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, WOW (Sky) and Disney+, the monthly bill is quite substantial. But how expensive would it actually be to subscribe to each streaming service? Well, not everyone, there are too many for that, especially with the smaller niche topics. But the big, well-known services, of which there are now more than enough. To find out how broke I would be then, I added up all the costs. Before we conduct this thought experiment, we need to do a few

ground rules

define:

1. Which streaming services do we include in the bill?

There are now a huge number of streaming services, from industry giants like Netflix to niche players like Crunchyroll. We have chosen a selection of the largest and most well-known providers:

2. Streaming services offer different packages – which one do we choose?

For our experiment we match the ultimate consumer: he wants to receive every service in the best possible quality. That’s why we choose the cheapest package for each provider, with which we have the full video quality at our disposal.

3. Do we opt for monthly or yearly billing?

Since our fictitious consumer would like to remain flexible with so many streaming services, we opt for monthly billing.

The streaming services at a glance

Now to the actual streaming providers. Let’s go through the list above one by one and see what our individual monthly costs are.

Netflix: 17.99 euros per month

If we want to enjoy the full video quality on Netflix, we absolutely need the most expensive package for 17.99 euros per month. This includes 4K streaming on up to four devices simultaneously.

Amazon Prime Video: 7.99 euros per month

In order to be able to stream movies and series on Amazon Prime Video, we must be a member of Amazon Prime. That costs us 7.99 euros per month.

Disney+

: 8.99 euros per month

For Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and many other franchises we need a subscription to Disney+. 8.99 euros per month are due for this.

Waipu.tv

: 12.99 euros per month

We also subscribe to Waipu.tv. The offer is similar to that of MagentaTV, in addition to our own media library with films and series, we can also access many German television channels and some pay TV channels. We pay 12.99 euros per month for this.

DAZN

: 29.99 euros per month

The huge price jump at DAZN from 14.99 euros to 29.99 euros a month caused a lot of uproar, but it is now official. If you want to watch Bundesliga, basketball and Co., you can’t avoid DAZN.

WOW (Sky)

: 44.97 euros per month

Since we want to be able to cancel on a monthly basis, a regular Sky subscription isn’t an option for us. Instead, we choose WOW, formerly Sky Ticket. The combined tickets for films, series and sports cost us 44.97 euros per month.

JOYN

: 6.99 euros per month

Joyn, a streaming service from ProSiebenSat.1 Media and Discovery, not only offers German TV shows with Joko and Klaas, but also a selection of films and series such as Jerks. For this we have to pay 6.99 euros per month.

RTL+

: 4.99 euros per month

Similar to JOYN, RTL+ offers the media library of the RTL Group and also a range of films, series and documentaries. Cost: 4.99 euros per month.

AppleTV+

: 4.99 euros per month

Apple TV+ started with bangs and trumpets, but Apple’s own streaming service has been quiet since then. The service primarily wants to score with exclusive in-house productions, but for this very reason it has a smaller range than the competition. The service only costs EUR 4.99 per month.

Discovery+

: 5.99 euros per month

The newest streaming service on this list has only recently launched and mostly offers docu-series as you would expect from the Discovery Channel. We choose the ad-free model for 5.99 euros per month.

MagentaTV

: 10 euros a month

Telekom’s streaming service combines its own selection of films and series with a hard disk receiver for time-shift television and access to the media libraries of the public broadcasters. In addition, users can book subscriptions for providers such as Netflix or Disney+ directly. In this case, however, we opted for a pure MagentaTV subscription for 10 euros per month.

Conclusion: This is how expensive all streaming services are together

So now we have eleven different streaming services subscribed to and more movies and series to choose from than we can ever watch. And our

monthly costs

be:

155.88 euros.

Calculated over the year, that would be

1870.56 euros.

A closer look at the costs of the individual subscriptions shows that sports fans in particular have to dig deep into their pockets. If you want to follow all games of the 1st Bundesliga alone, you have to become a customer of WOW and DAZN and put 60 euros a month on the table.

So that’s how expensive it would be to be a customer of eleven different streaming services. Is it worth it? Well, probably not. For 1870 euros I would rather go on vacation again. Nevertheless – even my “only” four streaming services cost me almost 55 euros a month. Do I even need all of them? no Do I treat myself to it anyway? Yes.
