“I was the companion of Cédric Jubillar”

From our special correspondent in the Tarn Arnaud Bizot

“The star of the Tarn” is the nickname he chose. Main suspect in the case linked to the disappearance of his wife on the night of December 15 to 16, 2020, Cédric Jubillar is not close to provocation. The weeks preceding her indictment, Séverine shared her daily life. Despite their intimacy, she still does not know if the 34-year-old ex-plasterer is “either completely stupid or extremely clever”. Portrait of an enigma.

His bluster, his detachment, the enormities he laughed at me seriously shocked me at first, ”says Séverine, 45 years old. Séverine lived two months in the intimacy of Cédric Jubillar, from mid-April to mid-June 2021. Delphine had disappeared only four months earlier; however, Cédric Jubillar had already had two other adventures. “I thought he forgot very quickly,” she continues. Séverine would have dreamed of being a “psychologist or mentalist”, as in the television series. Mother of two sons from different unions, she worked in the lingerie of the psychiatric unit of Albi hospital. “I like the world of madmen,” she says in her deep voice, dented by life and by “disappointing” men.

Funny, cash, transgressive, “like Cédric”, her head firmly on her shoulders, she assumes her little crazy side. “I like to be useful. “During these two months of living together, she constantly questioned herself, trying to analyze the character. Guilty, not guilty? “I went from doubt to certainty and vice versa. With him, I was comfortable without being completely. I sometimes wondered: “What if he stabbed me in the middle of the night? What if his wife were to suddenly reappear in the house? It all started after a discovery by Séverine. In remission from breast cancer, she occasionally takes part in hunts, looking for clues with her eldest son, who, as a teenager, had vaguely known Cédric Jubillar. They both think he’s innocent.

In April 2021, they find a sweater buried underground. Pieces of old cloth with holes stick out. Séverine warns the gendarmes: “They showed up at four. “She then sends the photo of the sweater to Cédric Jubillar, to whom she sent a message of compassion and support on Messenger shortly before. The sweater doesn’t tell him anything. “I invited him to eat at home with my son and friends. He stayed to sleep, because of the confinement. Our story started from there. We were doing good. »

Séverine will avoid talking about Delphine Jubillar to her companion. “One day, however, I threw at him: ‘Tell me what you did with your wife…’ He answered me tit for tat, very seriously: ‘I buried her in the farmhouse which burned down! ” [La grange d’un corps de ferme proche du domicile des époux Jubillar, à Cagnac-les-Mines, a pris feu le 15 avril 2021.] “You piss me off, Cedric! You make me doubt. And it was you who set the fire? – Yes !” he replies confidently. “It was the investigation that exculpated him by showing that he was detained, that day, on a construction site far too far away…”I also asked him why he had called the gendarmes so quickly, only twenty minutes after the disappearance of his wife: “At 6 o’clock, I got up to go to work, I didn’t have to give a damn.” His answer was so natural… A culprit would say that? »

Séverine begins to understand this man described by an expert psychiatrist “tonic in the repartee, immature, regressive, with very raw verbal expressions”. “He built a shell to defend himself from the outside world,” she says. His character protects him. He hides nothing. He often said to her, speaking in particular of the gendarmes: “They take me for an idiot, they want to play, so we are going to play. “She thinks that” the media coverage of the case has gone to his head a bit “, and recalls this selfie, the two of them embracing. He said, “Put it on your profile! “She suggests that he put it on his:” If you have the balls. Immediately, he does. This selfie will cause a small scandal in Cagnac-les-Mines and will ignite the networks. “I took the full face of it: unhealthy, alcoholic, drug addict, man-eater. The wickedness of people… You have to have the nerves! »

Beneath his grand airs, I saw him cry quite a bit. He was looking for explanations

But nothing seems to stop Séverine. She meets, in full investigation, a man considered the main suspect. “The ideal murderer”, he then said of himself. Séverine’s phone is tapped. The gendarmes follow her movements and those she makes with her companion. Him, it’s just if he doesn’t thumb his nose at them. One afternoon, they take the air at the edge of the lake of Homps, in Cagnac. Séverine’s car is parked on the grass while the car park is 20 meters away. A gendarme asks him to move it then throws to Cédric Jubillar, who, lying in the sun, laughs: “When we are going to catch you, you will be less clever. » To the psychiatrist mandated to assess him, Cédric Jubillar will also evoke his childish side, recalling this sentence of « madam », as, in an acid tone in front of the expert, he names his wife: « You still have 5 years or what? »

Every other week, when she does not have custody of her youngest son, Séverine moves to Cagnac. Cédric Jubillar offered to arrange a bedroom for his son. She refuses. He gets up early to go to work and comes home at the end of the afternoon. He finally started arranging the garden a bit, an indescribable job. “He didn’t know which way to take it,” smiles Séverine, who will do a lot of cleaning inside the house: “Ah! that, I bricked! In the morning, she drives the Jubillar’s daughter, Elyah, 18 months, to the crèche, then Louis, the eldest of 7 years, to school. In the evening, Cédric Jubillar plays with them and checks his son’s homework. “He could be adorable with him, says Séverine, then suddenly get impatient, get quite upset, for example for a poorly learned poetry. It blocked the child. I then took him to a separate corner, we studied together, calmly, and, in a short time, he knew his poetry, recited it proudly to his father, who hallucinated: “That’s good, my darling.” I repeated to Cedric that it was useless to yell at it. According to everyone, Cédric Jubillar is thus made, charming and, suddenly, freaking out. “Angry but also quickly seductive”, writes the psychiatrist. Sketch that Séverine summarizes with one word: “endearing”. These two have found each other but also bicker.

“I know, I’m an asshole”, he sometimes admits, as Ronan Folgoas, a great reporter at “Parisien”, reports in the book he devoted to the case, “Le Mystery Jubillar”, at Studiofact. On his wedding day, he writes, Cédric slips to a member of his wife’s family: “Now that I’m married, I’m going to have time in front of me for my little business… and have a little fun! His interlocutor finds him quite “twisted”. Another anecdote: in 2018, Jubillar was one of the ticket sales agents for a raffle at the Cagnac school. He holds the record for tickets sold but “his backhand, his sometimes aggressive and threatening tone” are shocking. Just like this day in 2019, when he was assigned this time to the sausages-merguez-chips stand at the village garage sale. He handles the food firecracker in his beak, telling those who are waiting and impatient to “go elsewhere”. Finally, during the municipal elections in March 2020, it was in the red jumpsuit of the robbers from the series “La casa de papel” that he presented himself at the Cagnac polling station, with a gas mask. “Just a delirium”, he confided to Ronan Folgoas.

I sometimes wondered, “What if he left me in the middle of the night?”

The week that Séverine babysits her youngest son, Cédric Jubillar moves into her home, outside Albi. “Our two sons got along well, recalls Séverine. We played Monopoly, rummy, yams. Louis and Elyah seem happy despite these sudden and complicated life changes against a backdrop of absence, mystery and whispers. From Tuesday evening to Thursday, they go either to their paternal grandmother or to Stephanie, Delphine’s sister. Four homes at such a young age… “Do you want to replace mum? Louis asks Séverine one day. “No Louis! she replied. Moms, we only have one. Yours, we are looking for it. In the meantime, I’m willing to give you the affection you need. You know you can talk to me about anything, whenever you want. ” ” It’s okay with me ! retorts Louis. “Often, says Séverine, Cédric showed his children photos of their mother. Louis asked: “When we find her, can we make our cake? Are we going to visit such a place? “Yes my heart”, answered her father, who was hiding to cry. Beneath his airs, I saw him cry a lot. He regularly checked the Internet to see what was being written or to read the latest information on the investigation. Cédric was looking for explanations, answers. He mentioned tracks, according to him badly or not at all verified. »

A few days before his arrest, his custody and his imprisonment, Séverine surprises him chatting with a girl on the networks. He denies it, but for Séverine, that’s the end of their story. She paid quite dearly for it: her family and most of her relatives turned their backs on her. Only her mother agreed to see her again, last February. In December 2021, she spent thirty-six hours in police custody for “concealment of a corpse”. The gendarmes were then convinced that Cédric Jubillar had confided in him. She quickly convinced them of her innocence, and they admit to having burst out laughing at her naturalness and her glibness. “I never regret the past. And then… I would have given two months of affection to Louis and Elyah,” she concludes without concealing her emotion.
In solitary confinement, Cédric Jubillar still corresponds with Séverine. She sends him money orders. In one of his letters, the number one suspect wrote to him about the burned farm: “I told anyone anything. I stop. Another missive contained a code, which a gendarme deciphered: “JT AIM FOR MON ANG. I WANT TO MAKE LOVE EVERYWHERE. “Foreseeing that the code would be discovered, he adds, to the attention of the prison staff: “GOOD READING THE PD IF YOU TROUF L CODE” (sic). Ultimate snub of a man that nothing stops.
