TF1 begins this Thursday evening the broadcast of I3P, a detective series led by Marc Lavoine which plunges us into the meanders of the Psychiatric Infirmary of the Prefecture of Police, a unique place in which the psychiatrist Mathias Bernardt and his team have the power to let their patients return to their normal life, to hospitalize them but also to hand them over to the police, all this in less than 24 hours. Every day, they race against time to solve the riddle of each patient’s life…
Does I3P really exist?
The Psychiatric Infirmary of the Prefecture of Police, nicknamed I3P or IPPP, is a psychiatric service located in the 14th arrondissement which only exists in Paris. Opened in 1872, it welcomes each year, for a maximum of 48 hours, approximately 1,900 people brought by the police to assess the need for psychiatric care.
This medico-legal service welcomes people presumed to be ill who have been arrested by the police services of the Paris police stations and at the airports. The IPPP welcomes patients who represent a danger to the safety of persons. Made up of 6 doctors, 4 interns, around ten on-call doctors, a health manager, 26 nurses and 25 supervisors, this service can accept up to 16 people at the same time.
In this particular structure, individuals are considered as patients, not as detainees. No police are present on the premises of the establishment and they are not handcuffed. The patient cannot stay more than 48 hours in the IPP. At the end of this period of time, the medical staff must decide on the need for admission to psychiatric care.
If hospitalization is not decided upon, the individual is handed over to the police in order to continue the legal investigation. According to the review ActuSoins, of the 1,900 people admitted each year, 55% need psychiatric care, while the remaining 45% come out of the IPP. Either they are handed over to the police or they go free.
Unlike the I3P series, the psychiatrists and nurses of this historic institution do not therefore embark on investigations in order to exonerate a patient, but rather they seek to determine in the best possible way what the most appropriate care will be. to help the individuals they serve.
