Ice Hockey World Cup in Utica – Finland too strong for Switzerland – Sport

  • The Swiss ice hockey team also lost the third game at the World Cup in the USA.
  • In the 2:5 win against Finland, the Swiss scored at least their first goals of the tournament.
  • After just 42 seconds, Petra Nieminen puts the Finns in the lead.

This is certainly not how the Swiss women had imagined starting their third World Cup game. After just 42 seconds, Petra Nieminen benefited from an insufficient clearance attempt by Laura Zimmermann and fed the puck into the empty net. The 1-0 win for the Finns, who are behind Switzerland in the world rankings but still clearly favored in the game.

Despite the early setback, the Swiss stayed with it and fought their way back into the game. With success: Lara Stalder scored the national team’s first World Cup goal of the year after 15 minutes. The EV Zug striker deflected a shot so that it slipped under the Finnish goalkeeper’s glove.

Error in the middle third

However, the Swiss joy only lasted for a short time. After a penalty against Annic Büchi, Ronja Savolainen took the Finnish lead again before the end of the first third.

The northerners showed off their qualities in the middle third. Sanni Vanhanen and Susanna Tapani scored two more goals (25th/34th) for a comfortable 4-1 lead before the final period of the game.

Stalder missed the connection

But the Swiss didn’t give up. Stalder missed two good opportunities to bring Switzerland back closer. Sinja Leemann did better around 10 minutes before the end of the game and scored ahead of Sanni Ahola to make it 2:4 – but the Swiss couldn’t get any closer. Instead, the outstanding Jenni Hiirikoski made everything clear with 5:2.

This means that the Swiss are the only team to remain without a point at this World Cup. Thanks to the mode, the national team is still certain of qualifying for the quarter-finals. In all likelihood, the opponent in the round of 8 will once again be Finland.

This is how it continues

The last World Cup group game awaits the Swiss on Tuesday. You can watch the duel with the Czech Republic live on SRF two from 9 p.m.
