  • The Icon of the Seas has set off on her maiden voyage.
  • The 365 meter long ship is the largest cruise ship in the world to date.
  • From one end to the other you have to take around 13,000 steps.

The ship “Icon of the Seas”, the largest cruise ship in the world, has set off on its maiden voyage. This takes the 365 meter long steamer from Miami on a 7-day journey through the Caribbean. We have summarized here which ports we will be visiting.

The ship is longer than the Eiffel Tower if it were tipped over. This is only 300 meters long. Compared to the previous record holder, not much has changed in terms of dimensions. The previously largest cruise ship in the world, the Wonder of the Seas, is 362 meters long and 66 meters wide, the Icon of the Seas is 365 meters long and 67 meters wide. However, the difference in volume is clearer. The gross tonnage (GT), which, to put it simply, indicates the volume of all interior spaces measured from the keel to the chimney, is 250,800 for Icon of the Seas and only 230,000 for Wonder of the Seas.

Reporter takes 13,000 steps

On board the maiden voyage are not only paying holidaymakers who want to escape the stress of everyday life, but also numerous journalists who accompany the first trip of the cruise ship powered by liquid gas. This also includes Lisa Minot from the British tabloid “The Sun”, who illustrates the dimensions of the ship again in a YouTube video.

In the 10-minute clip, she takes us on a walk from one end of the ship to the other. According to her, this lasted a total of eight hours. She walked 13,000 steps across various decks, past sky-high infinity pools and terrifying water slides and cable cars. Because a direct route is apparently not possible, instead she had to make her way over several stairs and levels. The ship has a total of 20 decks. The highlights on board include Category 6, according to Rederei the largest water park at sea, and the Crown’s Edge climbing park.

13,000 steps are the equivalent of around 8 kilometers. A walk on board is easily enough to more than cover the recommended daily number of steps. This is usually given as 10,000 steps, but some experts consider 7,500 steps to be sufficient. However, keep in mind that the number of steps of course also depends on your personal step size; Minot does not provide any information about this.
