Was your dream woman or idol one of the top models known as the “Big Six”: Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer or Kate Moss? Then you are probably a child of the nineties. But what does such a supermodel from the era of Tamagotchi, Game Boy and cassette recorders do today? And how have the ideals of beauty held up?
The nineties: models become stars
They earn millions in fees that make even film stars jealous and enchant the catwalk with fashion from world-famous fashion designers. And fashion magazines like “Vogue” or “Elle” don’t have a cover without a supermodel. At the beginning of the nineties they were able to do even more: top models like Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista landed film roles or starred in music videos.
The supermodel with a junkie look
As a counter-reaction to the all-around healthy-looking supermodels, “heroin chic” followed in the mid-nineties. Now the look with pale skin and, above all, petite dimensions is popular and the skinny model Kate Moss becomes its icon. The spindly Brit is enjoying a meteoric rise and is being booked by all the major fashion agencies despite her unstable lifestyle. The slimming craze triggered by her fame continues to this day: Keyword “Size Zero”…
The fashion icons today
Some former supermodels can still be seen trying to walk on the screen today. Others sing semi-professionally, have their own fashion magazines or are mothers and have become quieter. But most of them still have one thing in common, namely being simply beautiful.
