It’s in a new version of Play store from Google that AssembleDebug specialists discovered that the firm would prepare the deployment of a feature allowing users to download several applications at the same time.

Application stores are at the heart of technological ecosystems, and we see this clearly with the fight between Apple and Epic Games. But many companies such as Google, Microsoft or Amazon also do everything to ensure that users go through them.

At the moment, Google, which has established itself a little more in the public’s daily life with its Pixels, was looking to integrate a functionality taking advantage of current connection speeds to offer more comfort to its customers.

Simultaneous downloads on the Play Store, soon a reality?

The Google Play Store is accessible to anyone using an Android device. More open than some of its competitors, this application store contains hundreds of thousands of applications, whether free or paid. If you regularly use the Play Store, you will surely have noticed that it is not possible to download several applications simultaneously.

When you select several, they are downloaded one after the other. Requested for several years, the functionality allowing several downloads to be launched simultaneously was tested in 2019, but without ever being definitively integrated.

Things could change, however, as AssembleDebug dug into Play Store version 40.0.013 and discovered that an option being tested allows two apps to be downloaded at the same time. However, it is important to remember that at present, we do not know whether the experimentation milestone will be reached in order to become an option accessible to all.

Limits already detected

By default, this experimental option therefore allows you to launch the download of two applications, but AssembleDebug notes that this limit can be modified and therefore that Google could eventually put an end to this restriction.

By default, only two apps can be downloaded simultaneously. Google has limited this with a value. So I took the opportunity to change this limit from 2 to 5. It worked and I was able to download 5 applications at the same time. »

This therefore suggests that Google could increase the number of simultaneous downloads if the experiment is conclusive. However, don’t expect to do the same with updates, because, for the moment at least, nothing seems to be going in this direction. As the blog post points out, it makes sense that download capabilities would be increased in the era of WiFi 6 and 5G.
