if you purchased Discovery content on your console, we have very bad news for you

This weekend, Sony sent an email to PlayStation users which quickly ignited social networks. Indeed, a gigantic list of films and series available on the console Store will disappear on January 1, 2024. Unfortunately, users who purchased this content will see themselves dispossessed, without knowing the real reason.

Sony is definitely having a hard time getting gamers on its side lately. Between the general disappointment surrounding its PlayStation Portal and its lawsuit in the United Kingdom which could cost it several billion euros, the Japanese firm is at the heart of several controversies, to which was added a small one this weekend . The spark ? A simple tweet, in which an Internet user shares an email received from Sony.

“Starting December 31, 2023, due to our licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any Discovery content you have previously purchased and that content will be removed from your video library”, we can read in the message. You read correctly. Even if you purchased a Discovery movie or series on PlayStation, you will no longer have access to it starting next year.

Sony deprives PlayStation players of hundreds of films and series

Not the slightest explanation is given in the email sent by Sony, except these famous “licensing agreements”. Everything suggests, therefore, that the broadcast contract between Discovery and PlayStation has not been renewed. We probably have to look to the merger between Discovery and Warner Bros, which was formalized last year, to explain the end of this agreement.

A very insufficient reason to calm the nerves of Internet users, who have a hard time swallowing the fact that they are being deprived of content that they have paid for from their loved ones. For some, this event only confirms fears surrounding the gradual disappearance of the physical format. Following Sony’s announcement, many have called for protection, at all costs, of physical video games and other DVDs and Blu-Rays. For Discovery content, unfortunately, it is already too late.
