“I’m not going to hold out..” the moving testimony of a friend of the teenager

Ten days after the death of Enzo, 15, killed with two stab wounds in the Eure “for a simple look”, one of her friends present at the scene delivers a poignant testimony.

A look will have sufficed. On July 22, 2023, Enzo, a 15-year-old apprentice mason, leaves work and goes to the stadium in his town of La Haye-Malherbe, in Eure. He joins some friends there. There, two young people approach the group, and a “bad look” is exchanged. According to witnesses, Enzo spoke to them Why are you staring at us? We do not know each other.“According to the young boy’s mother, interviewed by Le Figaro, the teenager is not a brawler, but a conflict breaks out. “He didn’t give up. He put them on the ground but to have the last word, one of the two young people planted my son. Enzo takes a first stab in the thigh, then a second, fatal, in the chest. He manages to reach a fire station 150 meters away, but will not survive.

Present at the scene, a close friend of Enzo, Camille, was interviewed by Cnews this Monday, August 1. She bears witness to the scene, still traumatized. “I was walking towards him, he looked at me turning his head, he told me ‘Camille, I’m not going to hold out’. I understood what he meant, he had lost all his blood in no time. He died in front of me, but I can’t believe it.”

Relatives deplore the lack of reaction after this tragedy

For the mayor of the village, Serge Marais, the murder of Enzo was very quickly forgotten, and he has his idea of why. “We are abandoned. If it had been in a big city, we would probably have talked about it a lot more. I know the mom would have wanted support from the state, even if it was just a phone call.” The mother approved in the Figaro: “I am an angry mom. There is no call for revenge but I want justice to do something. (…) No one talks about my son because he does not come from a housing estate but from a small town?”

His call for help has taken another turn since July 31, 2023. The young man who stabbed Enzo several times could be released from prison before his judgment, a decision that is difficult for the mother to understand. “Imagine that he can come out before his judgment is unbearable for me. It’s inconceivable that he can continue to see his family, his friends, to party and to live while he has taken the life of mine. It is not logical.” Currently in a juvenile detention center, he will most certainly be released before the trial. In France, for minors aged 13 to 15, the maximum period of pre-trial detention is six months renewable.
