As we eagerly await the second part of the saga Dunes on the big screen, the MMORPG from the same universe continues to reveal itself to the public. Taking advantage of the PC Gaming Show 2023, Funcom developers highlighted progress on Dune: Awakening through a long interview of the key members of the project.
Premiering at Gamescom 2022, Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMORPG that immerses players in the unforgiving world of Arrakis. If you don’t know Dune, author Frank Herbert’s work has become in a few years one of the best-selling science fiction novels around the world. Now comprising an entire extended universe, the story was first adapted to the cinema in 1984 by David Lynch before returning to the big screen in 2021 through the vision of Denis Villeneuve.
Funcom is taking advantage of the new enthusiasm around the franchise to work on a particularly ambitious MMORPG, since it wishes to cover all aspects of Frank Herbert’s work and in particular the political and economic aspect. It must be said that Dune is renowned for the complexity of its history which revolves around the power struggle on Arrakis and in particular, the control of the spice. This resource will therefore be at the heart of the game, although the Dune universe is not just about that. The video notably presents the first combat mechanisms, evokes a class system, but above all reveals a little more of the visual richness of this universe.
For the moment, Funcom has not mentioned a release date for Dune: Awakening, the game is still in advanced stages of development. But it is already possible to register on the official site in order to have a chance to participate in a future Beta.
