Parliament definitively adopted the immigration bill on Tuesday, 349 deputies voting for and 186 against, after a favorable vote by the Senate earlier in the evening, a victorious epilogue for the majority, but carrying serious political consequences.
The National Assembly adopted the immigration bill this Tuesday, December 19. Within the different political camps, the mood was not the same with strong applause on the right and at the National Rally. On the left, the time has come for consternation, while the presidential majority is embarrassed.
The support of the National Rally acts like poison for part of Macronie. Marine Le Pen’s party claims an “ideological victory”. Enough to cause discomfort among a significant part of the majority. Ultimately, 20 Renaissance deputies voted against, 17 abstained. And that is enough for the happiness of Gérald Darmanin, satisfied as he leaves the hemicycle.
“A solid majority”
“Today, the majority was solid, but I am very proud to be in a government with a president who held on, who looked to the general interest of the French people above all else despite the pressure. The government knew how to work with the Senate without 49.3 before the end of the year. There you go, the mission is accomplished. It’s before the end of the year,” declared the Minister of the Interior.
Despite this optimistic picture, the crisis within the majority will remain the major event of the evening. Pressed by its left wing, the executive first considered withdrawing the text after agreement in committee, before raising the possibility of voting again in the Assembly if the bill was adopted thanks to the votes of the RN. The divide even reaches the government since Tuesday evening, the Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau, presented his resignation to Élisabeth Borne.
