Immigration: Republicans launch national petition and seek to put pressure on government

The theme of immigration has regularly come to the forefront in recent months. While the government has presented a new bill to this effect, which will be debated in the Senate next week, the Republican party does not intend to leave the field open to the executive.

Article 3 of the bill at the heart of the debates

The right-wing party is launching a national petition this Tuesday to denounce “uncontrolled” immigration and seek to gather as many signatures as possible to put pressure on the government. The idea for the petition was born during a group meeting at the Assembly. If it is shared by many at LR, it also leaves some skeptical: “Who imagines General de Gaulle launching a petition?”, quips an advisor in private.

LR is in any case seeking to occupy the ground, while talks are still underway within the majority around the maintenance or not of article 3 of the immigration bill, which provides for the regularization of workers in so-called “trades”. in tension”.

Gain visibility

But beyond this measure, the attitude to adopt towards the government’s text divides the right: on the one hand, the senators, rather favorable to a text which, failing to revolutionize the legal framework, would nevertheless go within the common sense. On the other, the deputies who reject a bill, according to them, ineffective, and who seem uncomfortable, politically, with the idea of ​​voting for a sovereign text from the government.

While the RN, concerned about its credibility, said it was ready to vote for the text if article 3 were to be withdrawn. The position of the Republicans in both chambers will be scrutinized, because in the event of disagreement between deputies and senators, the Republicans could once again fuel the illegibility of the trials.
