Immortals of Aveum: EA’s magical FPS is revealed in more detail


On the world fantasy of Aveum, a terrible war is raging. Named Everwar, since it does not seem to find a conclusion, it opposes the kingdoms of Rasharn, focused on imperialism, and Lucium, where the protagonists live. In this armed conflict, the opposing forces exploit the three colors of natural magic: the Green of life, the Red of chaos and the Blue of strength. Immortals of Aveum characterizing itself as a narrative FPS, we will follow Jak (no relation to Daxter), a Unforeseen – a mage whose powers awaken by surprise. He also happens to be able to control all three types of magic, a rare ability. Here he is enrolled in the Immortals, Lucium’s elite troop.

Evil, the enchanter

In terms of gameplay, the triad of primary colors represents different styles of play to combine to avada-kedave enemies with confidence. Each primary attack resembles a classic weapon archetype: blue is a rifle, red is a shotgun, green is some kind of homing uzi. Opposite, the mobs have colored shields to break through with the appropriate weapon. Our protagonist Jak also has his own shield, which evades the traditional cover system.

Beyond the basics, more substantial spells will complete our arsenal, such as the Shattera wave of destructive energy, or lash, which grips margoulines like a grappling hook. Chaining spells will, it seems, be the key to saving the world of Aveum. Succeeding in his combos will require managing his mana gauge, which takes the place of ammunition. In all, 25 spells and 80 talents will join our proverbial grimoire, not to mention the Sigils And Totems to buy or unearth, sort of passive amulets modifying and complementing our powers. These abilities will not only be used to kill NPCs. Puzzles and secret paths to unearth (via a little back trackingsometimes) are also on the menu.

Immortals of Aveum runs on Unreal Engine 5.1. Its technology of motion capture is used to bring the characters to life, especially General Kirkan, played by Gina Torres (firefly, Suits). Competing with the big competitors in the FPS sector, this premium blockbuster serves expressly to diversify the EA Originals portfolio (already containing Wild Hearts, Unravel and especially It Takes Two).

The project is led by Bret Robbins, creative director of the first Dead Space, then Call of Duty from Sledgehammer Games. His experience in the FPS should, we hope, bear fruit in this new project.

Immortals of Aveum will be released on July 20 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series at a price of 60 euros on PC and 80 euros on consoles.
