The organization, which presents itself as the first national representative of motorists to the public authorities and the economic sector of the road, specifies that this concerns a total of 7.2 million fines. It also makes it known that 95% of the excesses observed by automatic speed cameras are between 1 and 20 km/h.
Findings drawn up following a question posed by Françoise Dumont, Senator LR from Var, which led to the publication, by the Ministry of the Interior, of precise figures on the subject.
40 million motorists, which campaigns for more flexibility in the application of the law, underlines that France is the only European country to penalize so severely the small excesses of speed which would often be involuntary.

In a press release dated April 27, Pierre Chasseray, general delegate of the association, declares that “staggering sums are unjustly taken each year from the pockets of motorists, on the pretext of road safety. But in reality […] road mortality has not decreased significantly since 2013”.

According to 40 million motorists, these practices contribute to the discrediting of road safety policy and do not make it possible to tackle “the real causes of accidents”. The association calls on the state to introduce more sensible road safety.
In its press release, it also recalls “that in June 2021, a road safety policy evaluation report produced and published by the Court of Auditors considered that it was essential to change software to reconnect with a significant drop. and long-lasting road mortality”.
Thus, the “all-radar” policy would no longer make it possible to reduce accidents and deaths on the roads.
