After marking the start of 2024 with the launch of the Vision Pro and the announcement of an imminent integration of AI into its ecosystem, Apple intends to put a layer back into the field of innovation with the development of products folding. Since 2018, Cupertino engineers have been exploring the possibility of creating an iPhone that folds, and significant progress has been made in this direction.
According to a report obtained by the site The Information, Apple is currently working on at least two folding iPhone prototypes, which would adopt a clamshell design similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr 40.
Challenges to overcome
Apple’s ambition would be to stand out by designing a device twice as thin as current models. However, the path to commercialization is not without obstacles. One of the main challenges Apple faces is the durability of the folding screen.
Engineers are currently looking to ensure that crease marks are not too pronounced and that the screen is able to withstand intensive daily use. In addition, Tim Cook’s teams would bend over backwards to find the flagship feature, or the application that would make the difference, to justify massive purchases of folding iPhones.
Towards a folding future?
While rumors persist about a possible release in 2025, nothing has yet been confirmed by Apple. The project therefore remains at a preliminary stage of development, and the Cupertino company would continue to explore all possibilities.
Moreover, the Californian company does not seem to be limited to smartphones. If we are to believe an article from the Korean site The Elecshe would also consider a folding iPad, which suggests the arrival of small format tablets.
