In China, Arm continues to lay off workers

British semiconductor company Arm will lay off more than 70 software engineers in its operations in China. Some of its positions will be transferred outside the Asian continent, according to Bloomberg.

The job cuts are a cost-cutting measure in response to the slowdown in the smartphone industry and other technology sectors. Previously, Qualcomm, another major chipmaker, announced massive layoffs in the United States and China for the same reason.

China is one of Arm’s main markets, but the company faces several challenges. Firstly, restrictions imposed by the United States and its allies on exports to China of advanced technologies in the field of semiconductors – including those related to artificial intelligence. Late last year, Arm also refused to sell intellectual property for its server chips to Chinese company Alibaba.

Arm China had already laid off more than 90 people at the start of the year, mainly in research and development positions, who were working on new semiconductor technologies for the local market.
