In Egypt, President Al-Sissi re-elected without surprise

Some 67 million Egyptians were called from December 10 to 12 to choose their future president, and unsurprisingly, they re-elected the outgoing candidate Al-Sissi, with 89.6% of the votes, according to the official results announced Monday 18 December.

This election comes as the war has raged since October between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip bordering Egypt and the most populous Arab country is caught in the worst economic crisis in its history.

Besides Mr. Al-Sissi, three candidates generally unknown to the general public were in the running. Two other opposition figures tried to present themselves for a time, but were quickly dismissed.
