Private salaried employment increased by 0.4% in the first quarter, in France, with 86,800 net job creations, according to the final estimate published Thursday, June 8 by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). This estimate is twice as strong as the provisional one published on May 5.
After +0.2% in the previous quarter, this is the ninth consecutive quarter of an increase. Private salaried employment exceeded its level before the health crisis, at the end of 2019, by 6.1% (i.e. + 1.2 million jobs).
Temporary employment fell sharply
In detail, temporary work fell back sharply this quarter: − 2.2% (ie − 18,100 jobs). A decline that completely erases the increase of the two previous quarters. The temporary employment rate is 2.2% lower than its level in the first quarter of 2022 but 2.3% higher than its pre-crisis level.
Excluding temporary work, industrial employment rose again by 0.3% (+8,200 jobs) after +0.2% in the previous quarter. It is 1.2% above its level a year earlier and 1.8% above its level at the end of 2019.
In construction, employment fell by 0.1% (ie −1,500 jobs). This is the first quarter of decline in this sector since the fourth quarter of 2016. However, it exceeds its level of the first quarter of 2022 by 0.4% and 7.8% its level at the end of 2019.
In the commercial tertiary sector, employment accelerated: +0.7% after +0.2% (ie +88,300 jobs after +22,700). It exceeded its level of a year earlier by 2.3% (ie +290,500 jobs) and that of before the crisis by 7.5% (ie +886,400 jobs).
In the non-market tertiary sector, it also increased: +0.2% (i.e. +15,200 jobs) after +0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022.
