PSG goalkeeper in ‘serious condition’ after riding accident

Just hours after winning the league with Paris Saint-Germain, France’s reserve goalkeeper Sergio Rico is flown to an intensive care unit in Seville. He is in “serious condition” and struggling after a riding accident, his family says.

The Paris Saint-Germain reserve goalkeeper was taken to an intensive care unit in Seville by helicopter on Sunday after suffering a serious horse-riding accident in Huelva. Rico had traveled back to Spain after the penultimate game of the season to spend a few days off before the last game against Clermont Foot. As the goalkeeper’s family now announced in their statement, Rico was on his way to a trade fair when the accident happened. A horse bolted and kicked him. A donkey cart was also involved in the incident, it said.

As reported by “Marca”, reports of a rider falling were received early on Sunday morning. Lying on the ground, he received several kicks in the head from a horse. The general condition of the injured was therefore “serious”. “We must act with caution, especially in the next 48 hours,” the family said. A spokesman for the French champions also stated that Rico was in a “serious condition”. It was later said that the club was in constant contact with the family.

Rico has been playing for the French series champions PSG for four years. After the Parisians loaned him from Sevilla for a year in the 2019/2020 season, they signed him in the summer of 2020 for a transfer fee of six million euros. He returned to Spain on a six-month loan in the second half of the 2021/2022 season. Between February 2022 and May 2022 he was in goal for RCD Mallorca in a total of 15 competitive games.
Rico has played a total of 24 games for PSG since September 2019, but has not played behind world-class Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this season. In the 2018/2019 season, Rico stood between the posts for the English club Fulham.
