In Kenya, thousands of goats perish in rare floods

In northern Kenya, thousands of goats and sheep died in floods after a long period of drought.

Dead goats lying on barren ground bear witness to the devastation that has occurred in northern Kenya. In Marsabit County, torrential rains have been pouring in over the past week, accompanied by high winds and colder than normal temperatures. In some places, it rained almost 90 mm per day. The last time the region was hit by similar rains was in 1998, Kenya’s meteorological department said.

According to a North Horr constituency official, herders lost around 20,000 goats and sheep in the bad weather which led to flooding. “The goats I had were all I relied on to live on, now I can’t afford it,” one of the affected farmers told Reuters.

These floods followed an intense drought that raged from October to December. The animals, emaciated and hungry, did not survive these floods. It was the third consecutive season of poor rains in eastern and northern Kenya, where pastoralism is the main source of income.
