Dominant Zverev happily walks on

Strong performance of the German top player in Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev leaves Tennys Sandgren from the USA no chance and moves into the third round. Above all, the 24-year-old from Hamburg can rely on his serve. Andrea Petkovic, on the other hand, has to leave.

Alexander Zverev easily reached the third round at Wimbledon. Germany’s top player won against Tennys Sandgren (USA) 7: 5, 6: 2, 6: 3 and will now face the winner of the US duel between Taylor Fritz and Steve Johnson.

Zverev was able to rely on his serve against the 29-year-old Sandgren from the start. The 24-year-old from Hamburg already hit nine aces in the first set, and in the end it was a total of 13. Zverev had a good rhythm, moved forward more often and convinced with a varied style of play.

In the first round, Sandgren kept up relatively well before he had to give up his serve to 6: 5 for Zverev in the eleventh game. He used the template and converted his first set ball to 7: 5 after 40 minutes. In the second set, Sandgren, number 68 in the world, gave his opponent many easy points through his own mistakes. After two breaks to 2: 1 and 4: 1, Zverev made the 2: 0 set lead perfect after 70 minutes with the point to 6: 2. The only upset up to that point: Sandgren repeatedly fell the ball for the second serve out of his pocket.

In the third set, Sandgren struggled as best he could, but had nothing to oppose Zverev’s massive game. The quick break to 2: 1 brought the world number six easily over time, after 1:45 hours Zverev transformed his first match point.

Petkovic has to leave

For Andrea Petkovic, however, Wimbledon is over. The 33-year-old from Darmstadt lost in the second round to French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) 5: 7, 4: 6. Petkovic held up to 5: 5 in the first set, but then the 33-year-old made too many mistakes. After losing the serve to 5: 6, she had the chance to immediately take the service from Krejcikova for her part, but could not use her options.

Petkovic, currently ranked 130th in the world, converted a 1: 3 deficit into a 4: 3 lead in the second set and was all the more annoyed when she lost her serve again to 4: 5. The overall more solid acting Krejcikova ended the encounter shortly afterwards after 1:20 hours.
