In Morocco, a record seizure of more than 31 tons of cannabis

The Moroccan police announced on Wednesday evening April 27 a seizure ” record “ of more than 31 tons of cannabis in a warehouse near Tangier, in the north of the kingdom, and the arrest of a man, we learned from an official source.

The police men “on Wednesday thwarted a major international drug trafficking operation and seized a record shipment of 31 tons 197 kilograms of chira [résine de cannabis] »indicates a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

The operation was carried out in a warehouse near Tangier where the cannabis “has been packed and stuffed into fruit and vegetable figurines, the color and size of which are likely to facilitate their exit from Morocco as agricultural products for export”according to the same source.

A large refrigerated trailer containing dozens of bags and bundles filled with hashish was also seized at this warehouse. A 61-year-old man with a criminal record was arrested and taken into custody because “suspected of links with a criminal network active in international drug trafficking”details the DGSN.

The investigation is continuing to “determine all the regional and international ramifications of this criminal network”. Moroccan authorities occasionally announce the seizure of varying quantities of cannabis resin, but this operation is the largest since the beginning of the year.

More than 191 tonnes of cannabis resin were seized in 2021, down 12% from 2020, according to official figures. Also in 2021, the country passed a law authorizing the therapeutic use of cannabis, a major reform for this North African country considered one of the world’s leading producers of hashish, grown mainly in the mountainous region of the Rif ( north).
